Mrs. Vicki Newton, International Program Officer of World Horse Welfare: Promoting sustainable development by improving animal welfare

          On September 19-20th 2019, “3rd World Conference on Farm Animal Welfare” was held in Qingdao. The conference was jointly co-hosted by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and China Association for the Promotion of International Agricultural Cooperation (CAPIAC). Vicki Newton, International Program Officer of World Horse Welfare, delivered a speech at the opening ceremony.

          According to Vicki Newton, animal welfare was very important to people, nature, and animals. "Beijing Consensus" was to unite the consensus of all parties and to support more sustainable agriculture by promoting animal welfare improvement. She hoped that the efforts for animal welfare improvement can be sustained so as to achieve the  sustainable development goals and ensure good production efficiency, which required the joint efforts of everyone.

         Vicki Newton pointed out that it was necessary to guarantee good welfare for equines from birth to death. World Horse Welfare cooperated with Chinese organizations to promote capacity building and share scientific knowledge so that everyone can work together to achieve this goal.
